Pullen: Giffords Out of Step with Obama Administration
| Pullen: Giffords Out of Step with Obama Administration Phoenix, AZ - Citing a disconnect between Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and President Obama's stated immigration enforcement guidelines, the Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party today called on Representative Giffords to rescind her sponsorship of a bill which would scrap the successful E-Verify system and place nearly all immigration enforcement systems in the hands of the federal government. Late last week, President Obama and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano released their new guidelines for immigration agents which include fines and criminal charges against those employers who knowingly break the law and hire undocumented workers. This announcement by the Obama Administration appears to be contradictory to Representative Gabrielle Giffords sponsorship of a bill which would simply eliminate an additional tool that Arizona law enforcement uses to discourage the l hiring of illegal immigrants. "It appears that Congresswoman Giffords is not only out of touch with her own constituency, she is out of touch with her own Party," said Randy Pullen, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party. "On one hand, President Obama wants to crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers, and Ms. Giffords wants to eliminate one of the tools we have to identify and prosecute these offenders, which make it easier for unscrupulous businesses to take advantage of those looking for work." "From Congresswoman Giffords perspective, she would strip Arizona's ability to go after businesses who are exploiting undocumented workers because it is ‘burdensome' on business. We have thousands of businesses in Arizona using E-Verify. These requirements are not burdensome, but her effort to undo what the legislature and Janet Napolitano saw fit to put into law certainly is tiresome." "What is concerning to me is why anyone, especially a member of Congress, would take the side of businesses who are hiring undocumented workers and restraining enforcement of immigration statutes. I would say that I'm stunned, but it seems like it is just more of the same from those who advocate for open-borders." Date: 5/7/2009 |
