Arizona Republican Party Statement Regarding Ron Barber Announcement to Seek CD-8 Seat
(PHOENIX, AZ) - The Arizona Republic Party issued the following statement regarding the announcement by Democrat Ron Barber to seek the Eighth Congressional District seat recently vacated by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
The Arizona Republican Party welcomes the former state director of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to the field in the eighth congressional district. While it appears that Arizona Democrats may be unifying behind Mr. Barber in his bid to serve out the remaining term of Congresswoman Giffords, Republicans will field a diverse and energetic group of highly qualified candidates for the congressional seat.
NRCC Spokesman, Daniel Scarpinato, said, “No one wanted this special election to happen, but it comes at a time when Arizona and our country are at a critical crossroads.  The issues and challenges are too great to deny voters a full debate on which candidate is best to secure our border, create jobs and turn our economy around.”
“This special election is another challenge that voters in the community did not wish for as they continue to pray for Congressman Giffords recovery,” Republican Party spokesman Shane Wikfors said. “At the end of the day, elections are about choices and issues. Voters will be choosing between two different visions for the country, and we are confident our vision will win in that debate.”
As of Thursday, there are now four Republicans officially in the Republican Primary Special Election. Those names include Arizona State Senator Frank Antenori, Dave Sitton, Jesse Kelly and newly announced, Retired USAF Colonel, Martha McSally.
