Arizona Democrats Resort to Attacking Congressman’s Mother Over Redistricting Failure
Democrat Party Chairman Takes to National Media, Lies About Marilyn Quayle

PHOENIX – Last Thursday, Arizona Democrat Party Chairman, Andrei Cherny appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews to discuss the removal of Chairman Colleen Mathis from the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission. In his appearance, Cherny made the comment that Congressman Ben Quayle’s mother had contacted Governor Brewer pressing for Governor Brewer to call a special session of the legislature in order to remove Mathis. The transcript of the remarks is as follows:

Matthews: Do you think there was any pressure on Governor Brewer from the leaders of the Republican Party in Washington damned to determine to hold the House this next election?

Cherny: Oh absolutely. We know up front that the people in our congressional delegation, Congressman Quayle and others, Congressman Quayle’s mother – they were all calling Governor Brewer and saying that she has to call this special session.

“Cherny’s remarks on Hardball were completely unfounded, absolutely outrageous and disrespectful in the lowest regard,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman, Tom Morrissey. “The former Second Lady of the United States deserves an immediate retraction and a sincere apology from the head of the Arizona Democrat Party. This is the sort of tactic you would expect from an immature sophomoric individual,” Morrissey added.

Comments by Arizona’s top Democrat were also littered with multiple falsehoods about the AIRC at the same time he took swipes at the Republican congressional delegation, Governor Brewer and the Arizona Legislature. “Cherny can’t seem to grasp what the voters approved in 2000. His failure to understand the constitutional mandates of the AIRC are surprising,” said Thayer Verschoor, Chief of Staff for the Republican Party. Even more bizarre, Cherny’s behavior on national media was unbecoming a party official. “The next thing, he’ll be claiming is that the Congressman’s seven-week-old daughter pressured the Governor to remove Mathis,” Verschoor remarked.
